Johor Crown Prince Tengku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has rejected an alleged proposal by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin that he take charge of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

"Lately Khairy has proposed that I take up the job as FAM president.

"I do not agree to me being the president of FAM because I have JDT. There will be a conflict of interest as I will be biased towards my state," Tengku Ismail said in a Johor Southern Tiger's Facebook posting today.

He also said that FAM should not be headed by a royalty.

"The FAM president should not have come from the royal family, must have no affiliation with any state football associations s or participating clubs. He must also be someone who is neutral to all states and participating clubs.

"This is purely to avoid corruption and favoritism."

However, Tengku Ismail said that he is still mulling whether to accept an offer to take a leading roll in the national team as well as Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP), the company in charge of Malaysia's football leagues.

"I will wait to meet (YB) Khairy Jamaluddin and FAM treasurer Norza Zakaria again before making my decision."

The prince was commenting on a meeting he held with Khairy and Norza last week on how to improve the FAM.

Tengku Ismail has been a strident critic of the association.

He said that during the meeting, he had called for the current president and executive council to be removed and replaced with new leaders who would strive for what is best for the national football.

Among his other proposals was for referees to have their own independent body to avoid influence from FAM officials, and for the national team to hire a foreign coach.
