YOURSAY | 'You should have realised that you are a targeted man.'
‘I have accepted that I’m going in,’ says Guan Eng of jail
6th Generation Immigrant: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, for a targeted man, you should not be just clean, efficient and trustworthy; you must be seen to be acting clean, efficient and trustworthy.
You allowed a small hole in your aura, and your enemies started chewing at this hole until it is as big as a doorway for enemies to penetrate. This is similar to DAP using the 1MDB issue to gnaw away at Prime Minister Najib Razak and his regime.
Secondly, your abrasive style has made your enemies associate you along racial politics - guilt by association.
It is hoped that after all these episodes, you can at least try to emulate President Barack Obama of the United States, and stay above petty politics and use calm and intelligence to fight for all Malaysians, including those ignorant Umno members who have been misguided. Help everyone irrespective of race, religion or alignment - your greatness will multiply.
Cogito Ergo Sum: When you are in public office, you do not have a private life. Everything you do, including buying a house, must be at current valuation. There is no such thing as getting a good deal for yourself while you are holding public office. Didn't you read any books by great politicians?
Drngsc: Yes, it is best to accept and assume that you are going to jail, and prepare for all eventualities. You are innocent, and you will return.
But in the meantime, accept that they want to fix you as you have been too effective. Buying goods and services at a cheaper rate is a way of life for Malaysians.
I am sure that even your goodself will wish to buy your house below market value (legally), if possible. The other accusation - well, the rezoning was never carried out.
Madam Phang did not benefit. With all the files and evidence available to MACC and the police, they could only come up with these two flimsy charges. What a shame.
MO1 stole US$731 million, fully documented and yet not a sound from MACC or IGP. Malaysia Boleh. Guan Eng is going to jail, but that will be a coup for Pakatan Harapan in GE14.
OneVoice: For the life of me, how can Guan Eng's supporters think he is a victim? He has been around since 2008 in Penang, and no one has disturbed him, and then he does this - buy a bungalow at much lower than the market price.
Are you all saying this is the new norm for corruption? What is stopping anyone from selling a government servant a bungalow for half-price when they want favours done? Every one of them can claim ‘willing-buyer, willing-seller’.
This will then move to other things like condos, cars and land, all on willing-buyer, willing-seller basis. And this will all be given by third parties, so that it becomes more believable.
When a police officer or a Road Transport Department officer stops me, if my friend, who is not involved with them gives RM300-RM500, it’s willing-giver, willing-taker, so no corruption is committed? What a stupid cockeyed way of thinking.
Robbed: There can be no politician like Guan Eng, who has already been jailed for the rakyat. Which Umno politician can stand up like that for the people? Although I hate his arrogance, we need someone like him to lead the people, strong, and demanding. Minus the arrogance, these are the trademarks of a leader.
Ah Hoe: Umno must destroy DAP by finishing off Guan Eng's political career, because DAP has become too attractive to young Malays. Umno wants young Malays to hate DAP.
Proarte: If Guan Eng is convinced he will be convicted for corruption, then I think he should should resign now as chief minister and let Penang DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow take over the reins.
It would lead to a smooth transition of power, with the added benefit of Guan Eng being still around to guide Chow in his new role. This would be seen as politically mature and having the best interests of the people of Penang at heart.
Also, as Guan Eng claims to want to 'let the people decide' by having state elections, then he should be consistent and not postpone the DAP elections, which would allow other loyal DAP leaders to take up the powerful secretary-general's post.
Guan Eng's two terms are up, so why delay the polls and deny others the chance to be secretary-general?
Detractors should not be blamed for charging that Guan Eng is power hungry and is not consistent with his political principles.
Jbsuara: This process of selective prosecution and oppression of opposition leaders and activists critical of the current corrupt BN regime has gone too far. It has lead to a dysfunctional government, which is not able to apply 'check-and-balance' measures anymore to keep the nation healthy, free and progressive.
The amount of lies propagated by ministers, leaders of the regime and state-controlled media has certainly reached the 'trash' level, where even children do not believe what is being said. Shame to Najib Abdul Razak and his cabinet for leading this beautiful country to failed state status.
Caripasal: Let me guess. Did the seller get anything in return for selling the bungalow cheap? Oh yes, prosecuted for bribery. That is Malaysian law.
Cocomomo: If Guan Eng has done wrong in this matter involving RM2 or RM3 million, he should be held accountable. What is unacceptable is that billions have been lost through corruption, fraud and mismanagement, but those leaders get away scot-free. Race and religion are used to mislead the voters to continue to support a corrupt regime.
Malaysia has been blessed with so much resources. If properly managed, we would be far ahead of many other countries.
But the quality of our education is now screwed up and future generations are going to suffer as we continue falling, unless there are drastic changes for the better. Will change happen or will we let mediocre and corrupt leadership continue damaging this country?
Anticonmen: The ball is at the feet of the US Department of Justice.
Caripasal: Guan Eng,we know you are innocent. You are always for the country, unlike those jerks in Umno. The kangaroos in the courts will always do the unbelievable, we know. You will always be our Mandela.
New Dawn: Do not wish for something you don't really want, just to gain sympathy. You seem to be saying whoever the judge that is to be assigned to hear your case, you already know the verdict.
And by the way, no one can destroy Pakatan except Pakatan itself by its incessant internal disagreements and bickering made public, to score political points against its own component parties.
Fair Play: Why should Guan Eng resign? Innocent until proven guilty, right? Look at the bigger issue. Najib went on record to say our nation is not a failed state even if he continues to lead the country. Do we believe that?
CQ MUAR: It will be absolutely preposterous should the court find Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng guilty of abuse of power simply because he bought his house at below the market price.
Without being hypocritical, which person in this whole wide world isn't "guilty" of such an act, buying things or looking for a discounted price, a good bargain, including the judge?
While crime and murder cases are on the rise, the authorities seem more preoccupied with cracking down on flimsy cases and "criminals", especially opposition leaders.
What makes it more laughable lies in the fact that actual criminals, like Malaysian Official 1 who siphoned billions from the country, is not apprehended but cleared free of wrongdoing.
Was there police action taken against those government officials buying overseas properties, for example in Australia, at ridiculous and exhibortant prices?
Why the discrimination and such selective application of the law? Are we all not Malaysians, even if belonging to different sides of the political divide?
What is the difference between "below market price" and highly "inflated" prices? The whole country knows what was the motive and benefit with regard to the Australian properties issue. We are not idiots.
RM2.6 billion turkey haram: Guan Eng, you know that they are out to get you. Yet you threw caution to the winds. Your wife is a lawyer and should know better.
