Nothing concrete will come out of reopening PAC probe, says Umno MP

Reopening the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) investigation on 1MDB would not bring any concrete solutions, said a government PAC member Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir.

He said the PAC has already done its duty, whereas the powers of investigation and prosecution rests with the executive, namely the police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

“The PAC has already performed its task by producing a comprehensive report.

“The people should read it carefully especially in the attached hansard. We (the PAC) have already asked all the pertinent questions at the time,” said the Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP in a statement today.

What needs to be done now instead, he said, is for the government to act on the PAC’s recommendations and take action against individuals implicated in the report.

He said some of these issues have already been dealt with, such as changing all of 1MDB’s directors and abolishing the controversial Article 117 in 1MDB’s memorandum and articles of association.

However, he said people are still waiting for the police to complete its investigation on 1MDB, and for the A-G Chambers to decide whether or not to charge those implicated.

He said the issue has dragged on for too long, causing people to have a negative perception on the government.

Abdul Aziz was responding to fellow PAC member Tony Pua’s call for the committee to reopen its investigations on 1MDB, in light of revelations made by the US Department of Justice last month.

PAC chairperson Hasan Ali however refused, and later said this is because the existing report is already comprehensive and was endorsed by all PAC members prior to being tabled in parliament in April.

Pua walked out of the PAC meeting yesterday, while four out of five opposition PAC members including Pua skipped the next day’s meeting in protest.

The PAC report had recommended, among others, that former 1MDB CEO Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi be investigated over 1MDB’s weaknesses.
