A 36-year-old medical specialist, attached to a dental clinic in Bangsar, was charged in a Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur today with causing the death of Syed Alman Zain Syed Ali, the son-in-law of Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Dr Ting Teck Chin, who is an obstetrics and gynaecologist specialist, claimed trial to a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code.

If convicted, Ting faces a maximum jail term of 10 years or fine or both.

He is alleged to have caused the death of businessman Syed Alman at the Imperial Dental Specialist Clinic on Jalan Telawi in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, between 6pm and 9.05pm on June 1 this year.

Ting was represented by senior lawyer K Kumaraendran, while DPP Mohd Abazafree Mohd Abbas prosecuted.

Sessions judge Zainal L Saleh set bail at RM20,000 on one surety and fixed Oct 17 for mention.

Later at a separate Sessions Court, the director of Imperial Dental Specialist Clinic, Dr Wong Yen Ling, claimed trial to nine separate charges under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act.

If found guilty, the clinic can be fined between RM30,000 and RM300,000 for each charge.

The charges include not having a proper qualified anesthetist, not having a proper qualified radiologist, do not have a proper licence to administer anesthesia, do not have an oxygen tank to administer during emergency and not obtaining a licence from the Health Department director-general to administer anesthesia on Syed Alman.

Other charges are for not keeping and maintaining a proper data of its employees at the clinic, not having a copy of the medical history of Syed Alman when he was brought to Universiti Hospital for further treatment, failure to abide by the labelling of medicine, and not taking ample care of its staff from biological hazards.
