All ministers and members of parliament will receive a 10 percent hike in their salaries and allowances under the amendment to the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act tabled today.

The prime minister, deputy prime minister, cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, parliamentary secretaries, MPs, senators, the president and deputy president of Dewan Negara, the speaker and deputy speaker of Dewan Rakyat as well as the Opposition Leader will benefit from the new scheme.

The amendment was tabled by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohd Nazri Aziz in the Dewan Rakyat for its first reading.

Should it come into effect, the new salary rate will be backdated to Jan 1 last year.

The increase is estimated to cost the government some RM3.12 million extra per year compared to the last increase which cost RM2.3 million per year. The last revision was in 2002.

PM, DPM's salaries

Under the new scheme, the premier's monthly salary will be increased to RM22,826.65 from the previous RM20,751.50 while the deputy premier's salary will be increased to RM18,168.15 from RM16,516.50.

Ministers' salaries will be revised to RM14,907.20 from RM13,552 while their deputies will receive RM10,847.65 from RM9,861.50. The salaries of parliamentary secretaries will be increased to RM7,187.40 from RM6,534.

The Dewan Rakyat Speaker's salary will be hiked to RM14,219.92 from the present RM12,927.20 while his deputy's will be increased from RM8,800 to RM9,680.

As for MPs and senators, the revised salary rate will stand at RM6,508.59 and RM4,112.79 from the current RM5,916.90 and RM3,738.90 respectively.

Whereas, the Opposition Leader's salary will be raised to RM3,846.59 from RM3,496.90.
