Khairy Jamaluddin has taken a swipe at the headlines in two dailies on the Malaysian mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying bagging the silver in last night's final which drew condemnation from netizens.

The youth and sports minister emphasised on the need for positive vibes for Malaysian athletes competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

"Three more days left of Rio 2016. Only positive vibes for our heroes please! No more 'sekadar2' (merely) all. Just semangat (spirit). Let's believe. Malaysia Boleh," he tweeted.

Berita Harian's headline read, "Beregu campuran sekadar raih perak (Mixed doubles pair merely manages a silver)".

Whereas Kosmo's headline stated: "Peng Soon-Liu Ying hampakan jutaan rakyat Malaysia (Peng Soon-Liu Ying disappoint millions of Malaysians)".

The dailies' Facebook pages saw scores of angry comments, and this led Kosmo to change the headline for its online version, which reads: "Tetap bangga pulang dengan Perak (Still proud for having returned with silver)".

Meanwhile, MCA president Liow Tiong Lai said he was "deeply disappointed" with the negative coverage of certain press.

"I am disappointed with their comments. It's utter rubbish. The pair did Malaysia proud for winning us a medal," he was quoted as saying by The Star Online.

The matter also took a racial twist with netizens circulating the Berita Harian Facebook posting on national cyclist Azizulhasni Awang clinching the bronze medal in the Keirin event.

"Azizulhasni Awang melakar sejarah jadi pelumba basikal pertama negara memenangi pingat di Olimpik apabila raih gangsa acara Keirin (Azizulhasni Awang makes history in becoming the first national cyclist to win an Olympic medal when he garnered bronze in the Keirin event)," read the post.

In an earlier tweet, Khairy also shared how Liu Ying underwent a double operation on her knees and 11 months of painful rehabilitation.

The minister noted how the pair, ranked 79 a year ago, beat the odds to reach the Olympic finals and secure a silver medal.
