Mayor expresses shock over arrest of senior City Hall officer
Ferdtan: Kuala Lumpur mayor Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz has expressed shock over the arrest of a high-ranking Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) officer by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Is this a joke? In any country, the mayor would have to resign for dereliction of duties.
Mushiro: The mayor expressing shock is a good attempt to dissociate himself from the alleged corruption. But DBKL is a place where anyone can see corruption at work even at their payment counters.
Please go check the lifestyle of their staff. See how many live beyond their means, own many houses/apartments and big cars, which even senior executives of private sector companies cannot afford.
Bluemountains: If large-scale corruption can take place in a government department, it can mean:
1) The boss does not know his job.
2) The boss is sleeping.
3) The boss has a share of the loot.
If government regulations are strictly followed, there is very, very little room for graft. More often than not, people at the top close one eye and shut the other.
Notsoshiningarmour: Indeed, the mayor should be investigated too. It looks that he has not been doing his job for which he is being paid by taxpayers. He should do the most honourable thing and that is to hand in his resignation.
Slumdog: Amin Nordin, this happened under your watch. No doubt, you were sleeping on the job.
You have an integrity unit and an internal audit unit, so what were they doing to monitor effectiveness of internal controls, segregation of duties, project approvals and expenditure, conducting random audits and following good governance principles?
Liew Lean Kut: I think the mayor and the Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor should be next to be probed.
There is no such thing as “I don't know, he was a good guy”. Just check their bank accounts and those of their immediate family members. Also try digging around the house for buried cash and gold.
Senior Citizen: Well, we had seen the false news on corruption involving former top cop Ramli Yusoff 's case. So we have to wait and see whether these officials have been framed or were really involved in corruption.
Cogito Ergo Sum: KL mayor, the fact that you were shocked indicates that you did not run a tight ship. As an organisation that faces so much criticisms, you should be micromanaging it.
However, the feeling is that you were not entirely kept in dark and you would have been informed of the nefarious activities at some point. This should never have been out of the blue.
Maplesyrup: What to do, Mr Mayor, when they see people having billions in “donations”, and able to spend more than RM100,000 on anti-ageing treatments and expensive hairdos, they are naturally tempted. Especially when they think they can also get away with it.
But really, telling them to be clean is not good enough, there should be proper procedures and mechanisms in place to catch them if they succumb to temptations.
If words are good enough, then we don’t need the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) or the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).
Anonymous 23651434356067: We are shocked that you are shocked. You don't seem to know the lifestyle of your people. This is shocking.
Goldee: We are not shocked because corruption is everywhere starting with the MO1, whoever he is. It rots from the head to the toe.
In this country, nothing is shocking anymore. But we are really shocked that there is a generous donor from Arab who is willing to donate his money by the billions.
Non Politican: The exhibits recovered speak for itself and this show the mayor’s lack of competency in supervising and monitoring his staff.
This could possibly raise other issues about the City Hall’s general administration.
David: Are you also shock that DBKL is running out of money to manage the city.
KLites are forced to pay higher taxes and increased parking rates because of corrupt officers right under your nose.
Mr Mayor, don't play the "I am shocked" wayang (play) with taxpayers.
Hang Babeuf: Recall here the immortal line of Claude Rains as Captain Louis Renault in the great 1942 movie ‘Casablanca’ - "I am shocked!". Same here?
And word will soon go out, to borrow another of Rains/Renault's great lines, "Round up the usual suspects!"
