Malaysia's badminton men's doubles pair Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong bagged a silver medal at the Rio Olympics.

Their dream of winning Malaysia's first ever Olympic gold medal was dashed after losing to China's Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan in a incredibly close match as the final set went into deuce.

The Chinese team got off with a strong start in the first set, pulling ahead of Goh and Tan but the Malaysian duo quickly caught up and overtook their opponents.

Goh and Tan secured the first set with a score of 21-16.

In the second set, the Malaysian team struggled from the very beginning, trailing 4-12 at one point.

Goh and Tan tried to close the gap but failed, losing the second set 11-21.

The duo adopted a more agressive gameplay in the third set but still trailed the Chinese team.

They managed to step up their game, equalising in the second half at 12-12.

However, several mistakes made by the Malaysian duo saw them falling behind again before equalising once more at 17-17.

The score continued to be incredibly tight, sending the game into a deuce, requiring the players to get two continuous points to win.

Despite Goh and Tan's best efforts, they were defeated 21-23.

The game lasted for 67 minutes.

Malaysia will have another shot at gold through its badminton men's singles player Lee Chong Wei who will face off against China's Chen Long in the final tomorrow.
