Detractors had accused his father Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who reigned as prime minister for more than two decades, of amassing billions, a charge which he denies.

However, his son Mukhriz said he once worked part-time when studying in Japan.

"After completing my studies in college, I was sent (for further studies) to Japan. I worked part-time in a bank there for just RM350 a month.

"I worked five days a week and used my wages for my needs there," he told Sinar Harian.

The former Kedah menteri besar's brother Mokhzani is one of the richest people in the country.

Mukhriz also revealed that he deliberately applied for a waiter position on social media in order to attract youths to take up part-time jobs to reduce the unemployment rate.

He said youths should not spend time at home after completing their education, and should look for jobs irrespective of the salary.

"We don't want our youths to waste their time with things which are not beneficial. If there is an employment opportunity, they should seize it," he said.

Last month, Mukhriz caused a stir when he responded to an advertisement by a cafe in Kedah looking for a waiter which was posted on Instagram.

Responding to the conditions stipulated in the advertisement, Mukhriz confirmed he was willing to work full time as he had no job, was above the age of 18, and God willing punctual as well.

To another requirement for an interesting personality, he replied: "Menariklah juga (Quite interesting)".

The admin of the Instagram account replied, "Kelia... nanti kita interview Datuk @mukrizmahathir.. hehe (We shall interview Mukhriz)."
