TangkapMO1 to continue with 'Jelajah Mahasiswa' roadshow

The Tangkap Malaysian Official 1 rally organisers today said they would continue to hold briefing sessions for all public and private university students on current issues related to state investor 1MDB.

Group spokesperson, Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof, said the first session was expected to be held at her own campus – Universiti Malaya – once the current semester starts on Sept 5.

"We will start with my own campus and we hope that the briefing can be held on the campus itself.

"If I can't even enter my own campus (to conduct the briefing), then I really don't know what to say," Anis Syafiqah told reporters when met after TangkapMO1's press conference at a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur.

She said this would be their next move after last Saturday's rally in Kuala Lumpur that pressured authorities to identify and investigate the individual identified as "Malaysian Official 1" in the US Department of Justice's 1MDB-linked civil suit.

She earlier read the coalition's statement to announce their roadshow dubbed 'Jelajah Mahasiswa Tangkap MO1' – targeting as many campuses as possible in this current academic session for public universities.

Responding to critics who urged the students to focus on their studies, Anis Syafiqah said: "We will identify the right time (to hold the briefings) that would not disrupt classes."

"I will also attend all my classes as usual, like any other ordinary students," said Anis Syafiqah who would be starting her final year as an Arabic language major.

She said this time the students would also be applying for official permission from campus authorities for them to meet their friends and explain about the issues.

Meanwhile, coalition member Luqman Nul Hakim said that their aim was solely to raise awareness and initiate discussion among students.

"If the incident outside UiTM happens again, then maybe we would reconsider the roadshow.

"But we just want to meet with the students and give a briefing... not to incite," said the Universiti Malaya Muslim Student Association activist who were among the three arrested during a TangkapMO1 pre-rally roadshow outside Universiti Institut Teknologi Mara Seri Iskandar campus.
Student Unity Front president Asheeq Ali pointed out that their briefing sessions would also be in line with the government's aim to cultivate a new generation of leaders through efforts such as the Youth Parliament.

"So the arguements that we should focus on our studies first should not apply because even the government is exposing the students to participate in such activities," he added.

Among others, Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil had reportedly advised the students to not get involved in such movements and focus on finishing their studies.
