The Kelantan menteri besar's office denied claims that the state funded a flood memorial monument at Kuala Krai.

The MB's press secretary Mohd Asri Mat Daud said the RM60,000 monument, officially opened by Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob last Sunday, was funded by the Association of Authorised Land Surveyors Malaysia (Pejuta).

He said the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (Jupem), the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) and the Kuala Krai District Council implemented the project.

"The monument was not at all funded by the state as claimed in baseless and confusing postings in social media," he said.

The monument is located in front of the Guchil Caltex Station in Kuala Krai, the district worst hit by the 2014 floods, known as the yellow flood after the colour of the floodwaters which ravaged the east coast and rendered thousands homeless.

"The monument was built to remember there was such a thing as the yellow flood, and is a symbol of thanks to the agencies, NGOs, corporate bodies and individuals who assisted victims of the yellow flood," Mohd Asri said.

It was earlier speculated that the monument cost RM80,000, enraging some netizens who questioned why such funds were spent when some flood victims are still homeless.

A satirical posting claiming the monument to be 'syariah-compliant' was also widely circulated online.

"There is a pentagon shape which represents the five pillars of Islam. Even more Islamic, is the price of RM80,000," the satirical post read.

"We see extreme wastage, two years after Kelantan was hit by the tragic flood," it read.
