Gov’t expresses regret over attack on Sri Lankan envoy

The government of Malaysia has expressed regret over the incident involving the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Malaysia, Ibrahim Ansar, and a group of protesters on at the KL International Airport on Sunday, reports Bernama.

It noted in a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry from Wisma Putra today that the incident caused minor injuries to the high commissioner.

“The Government of Malaysia expresses its sympathies to His Excellency Ibrahim Ansar and gives the assurance that the Malaysian authorities will investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice,” the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry would continue to work closely with the Sri Lanka High Commission in Kuala Lumpur to ensure that similar incidents will not occur in the future, it added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed has dismissed any elements of terrorism in the assault on the envoy.

"This is an isolated case of the conflict in Sri Lanka being brought into Malaysia. This is about the political differences in Sri Lanka," he said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.

The government wants to make sure the incident does not have any impact on Malaysia as it does not want to be seen as meddling in the saffairs of Sri Lanka, he added.

Malaysia is taking action against the assailants, he said.

The government has been engaged with the diplomatic community and has strengthened its communication channels with the envoys, he said.

"They can now communicate directly with me or other senior members of the ministry to basically handle their grouses and worries," he added.
