Gelang Patah Umno permanent chairperson Baharom Abdul Ghani's decision to quit the party had little impact on the division, said Umno supreme council member Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

"This had no big impact on the delegates as none of them followed the permanent chairperson's move to quit Umno.

"Gelang Patah Umno delegates want to signal to the others that they remain steadfast with Umno, and were willing to wait until the programme ended," Rahman tweeted after officiating the division meeting today.

Hours earlier, Baharom had announced during the division's annual meeting that he would be quitting Umno, and blamed Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for the party's woes.

In a video excerpt of his speech, Baharom told delegates that Umno’s leadership had refused to accept reality, and that Najib was the source of all the party’s woes.

Baharom was a founding member of the Gelang Patah Umno division, which he founded in 1994, and was an assemblyperson from 1995 to 2004.

Also quitting Umno today was Kulai Umno deputy chief Tosrin Jarvanti, who left the party by symbolically returning the Umno flag.

Their decision to quit the party came just a day after Persatuan Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) was given the final seal of approval by the Registrar of Societies.

Bersatu was formed as a vehicle for Umno rebels who had become disenfranchised by Najib's leadership.

The splinter party will be led by Muhyiddin Yassin as its president, and also former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its chairman.
