Native Customary Rights lawyer Harrison Ngau has responded well to treatment after he was warded for brain infection, and is expected to recover within weeks, according to a Facebook post by Jaringan Orang Asal Semalaysia (Joas).

Harrison's wife, Uding Ngau, said he is resting well after the doctor started administering medication, relating that doctors are confident that he will recover.

Acording to Uding, her husband’s MRI scan result is normal.

The neurologist diagnosed Ngau’s condition as brain stem encephalitis possibly caused by autoimmune or paraneoplastic syndrome, which describes a tumor that secretes antibodies against his own organs.

He will be given immunoglobulin injection therapy which will cost an estimated RM50,000 and is expected to recover if he continues to respond as well as he did now to the treatment.

Ngau is now in the intensive care unit at Timberland Hospital in Kuching.

He was admitted to Columbia Asia Hospital, Miri, when he lost his ability to walk and his speech became slurred.

He has represented Sarawak natives in customary rights cases for more than 20 years and represented the Baram community in court in the recently scrapped Baram Dam project.

Ngau was also detained for 60 days under the Internal Security Act during Ops Lalang in 1987, for anti-logging activities.

Joas has launched a campaign to help his family pay for his medical bill.
