Sri Andalas state assemblyperson Dr Xavier Jeyakumar has accused the Election Commission (EC) of erasing racially-mixed seats and replacing them with Malay-majority seats in its latest redelineation exercise for Selangor.

The PKR vice-president said an example was his own state seat of Sri Andalas.

“It shows an estimated 30,252 voters have been effectively moved, following the EC’s plans.

“Furthermore, EC has brought in 14,268 new voters from Malay areas.

“So from a 60-40 percent (non-Malay-Malay) mixed seat, we have become an about 85 percent Malay-majority seat,” Xavier said in a statement last night.

He said the EC has ultimately moved thousands of voters around to create fewer racially-mixed seats.

“Thus, the EC in one way or the other, has ensured that Selangor gets an increase in the number of Malay-majority seats,” he added.

Xavier said the more than 30,000 voters that were shifted out of his constituency were placed in the Kota Alam Shah state seat.

“Another 11,010 voters from the Sri Muda state seat and Pelabuhan Klang state seat have also been added to the Kota Alam Shah state seat.

“None of the original voters from Kota Alam Shah are in that constituency any more,” he said.

Xavier called the EC’s redelineation exercise “disgusting”.

“The principle of ‘one man, one vote’ has been totally compromised following the EC’s actions seeking to change the names of 12 parliamentary seats and 34 state constituencies nationwide.

“This to me is daylight robbery of the voters’ rights. The same voters who want to see a change in Malaysia.

“This is morally and legally wrong and the people should not allow it to happen,” he said.

Xavier urged the EC to reconsider its redelineation approach.
