YOURSAY | 'The apology would be turned into a major distraction by BN in GE14.'
Dr M clueless about Nurul Nuha’s demand for apology to Anwar
Victor Johan: I respect PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s daughter Nurul Nuha's right to ask of former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad's apology.
However, the timing of this is challenging too. Many are asking for the same. It is now Mahathir's call to answer when he does, or even doesn't.
However, it doesn't stop a united effort to take on Prime Minister Najib Razak and his Umno and BN.
Goldee: Nurul Nuha did the right thing when she asked for Dr M to apologise not only to his father but to the family, especially to Anwar's wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her children.
They have gone through hell. I do understand the hardship, agony, uncertainties and embarrassment they have gone through.
We have no right to comment about her feelings and make demands.
Vijay47: I can understand, Mahathir, that you cannot be expected to know everything that is going on in the country, or every comment made.
But now that you have been told that Anwar's daughter has insisted that you apologise for your injustice against her father, what are you going to do?
Rocky: I think Nurul Nuha is childish for requesting an apology at this point of time - is she saying that if Mahathir does not apologise, there would be no political collaboration?
Is she putting her own needs before the rakyat's? I don't think her father would do so, I understand that she and her family needs closure, but this is just not the time.
Sleepy: An apology by Mahathir will open a Pandora's Box, both legal and others. The time is not right with GE14 coming.
The apology will be turned into a major distraction by BN in GE14.
Sarawakian: I think it would be appropriate and politically savvy for Mahathir or Bersatu to issue an apology, not to Anwar but to the rakyat of Malaysia for their mistakes while with Umno, and ask the rakyat for a chance to redeem themselves.
An apology to Anwar would then be included in this apology since the persecution of Anwar is one of Dr M's mistakes.
Dr M must appeal to Umno members, and to appear weak and subservient to DAP or PKR would not look good to Umno members who are used to being taikors (big brother).
This apology would put the ghosts of the past to rest and instil confidence in all, including jaded Umno members, in Bersatu.
Hopeful123: I agree. This is not the time to ask for forgiveness. Dr M has already shaken hands with Anwar. That is enough.
There is no need for kenduris and prayers or public apologies. Let us get down to work. Please remember Dr M is also old and may be doing something good for the nation in his twilight years.
That itself should be taken as repentance. Respect him for his willingness to work with the opposition for a better future for our beloved Malaysia.
Anonymous_1419577444: The robbers are robbing your house right under your nose with impunity. Your neighbour comes over to help catch the robbers.
But you insist the neighbour say sorry for stealing fruit from your papaya tree before he is allowed to help you catch the robbers.
Anon11352: Mahathir's reaction to the question only shows he would not apologise to Anwar. Clearly what Dr M is doing is just to topple Najib and is asking Anwar's supporters to help.
Malayamuda: Malaysia has always been Mahathir's playground. He bashes his friends in this playground and when the teacher asks who bullied the victims, he puts on that innocent face of his.
Anonymous_1371455474: The old man only knows and remembers what suits him. Otherwise, his answers are "don't know", "can’t remember", "what are you talking about ....".
888: How are we to trust him? The rakyat, especially the non-Malays, want to know from him what is next after he has succeeded to oust the present PM.
We suspect it will be back to the old Umno, like it had been during his 22 years in power.
Cogito Ergo Sum: What is done is done and gone. Stop insisting for a public apology from Dr M. He is doing his best to say sorry by his gestures and comments. He even risks incarceration for saying many things that ordinary folk would be jailed for if they were to say them.
Right now. he seems to be the only one that BN fears. He may be the rallying point for the opposition. So let's not push him too far.
Kindness and forgiveness go much further than revenge.
