Can Anwar, Dr M act in concert or is this just a soap opera?

YOURSAY | Will their coming together be political success or an unfulfilled saga?

The ballad of Anwar and Mahathir

Citizen_Zero: Thank you, academician Khoo Boo Teik, for laying it out. These are the two greatest statesmen of our time. For who they are, for what they have gone through, for how they have affected the people, and for their legacy to this country, how really do you expect them to act?

An overture of one or the other, the clasping of the hands and a firm shake, a nod, and a smile. The simple gestures of great men have more meaning than any novice or self-centred lazy coward can comprehend.

If ever there is a meeting opportunity, this is it, and only those who are obsessed with being the only one who is right, will miss this chance.

This is indeed another chance to get it right. Those who are obsessed with how the past should have been, and how the future should be for them, will contribute to the missing of this chance now, which has already opened doors to more options for us to move forward.

If we are to only blame Anwar Ibrahim and Dr Mahathir Mohamad, then we are also equally to blame. For not being involved, for not engaging, for not sacrificing.

All is fair in love and war, and in politics. It's not what you do, but how you do it. Some may not believe in heart, only money. And thus I say this: It’s ultimately not fair when they take our money, and try to shut us up when we question them about it.

Now we want to take what is ours back. Our dignity, our power, our money. Whoever wants to do it with us, we are with you. The rest, you know who you are.

Jehangir: Will the ballad of two erstwhile political animals end in political success, or will it continue as an interminable, unfulfilled saga? No real answer by Khoo.

The Analyser: A ballad? More likely a soap opera with two hypocrites as the star performers. Malaysians can outdo the French when it comes to creating "an ideological agenda from a single detail".

With Anwar, and subsequently with Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, Malaysians have created an ideological agenda from nothing. Well, not really nothing. They created their ideological agenda from the delusions they have about themselves.

Pakatan Rakyat stood for nothing concrete and DAP stands for even less. Pakatan Harapan, that figment of the manipulated Malaysian mind, stands for even less than nothing.

HaveAGreatDay: So it has been 18 years? How time flies. I believe many of us working for change will find Khoo's contemplation very meaningful. Of course, the difficult part is walking the talk.

And, as Khoo puts it, if supporters of both can look to the bare minimum, the crux of the issue, perhaps, is that MO1 (Malaysian Official 1) will feel less secure in Putrajaya.

KCW: I must say this is a very eloquently enunciated opinion by Khoo. Very interesting indeed.

But the key to whatever significance that can be derived from the historic encounter of the two Malaysian political maestros are the details of the private conversation between them during their 30-minute (Mahathir himself said 50-minute) meeting.

To propose an ideological picture merely from a single word "embraced" uttered by the receiver, not the speaker himself, is an exercise of conjecture.

At this point, both Mahathir and Anwar, as well as those who are privy to the conversation, are keeping the details to themselves.

Perhaps the key to the details is held by Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali - the mediator and fixer of that historic meeting.

Cogito Ergo Sum: The power to change is in the hands of the people, the ordinary folk who are struggling against the tide of taxes and self-inflicted economic disasters.

The radical change in thinking required for reformasi to take place will come, when there is nothing left to gnaw at. It has nothing to do with this dynamic duo.

Righteous: Umno rules the Malays against the rest in the hold down there, peddling furiously that rickety BN vessel to support and sustain the "new tuans".

It’s time for MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PPP and et al in Sabah and Sarawak to ditch them into oblivion. Gerrymandering is now an exercise in "corralling" all of you into a corner, proclaiming that "Umno can go it alone" after GE14. You folks look, but don't see.

Behsaikong: At last, a credible, sensible and logical observation on a very significant handshake in Malaysian politics. Thank you, Khoo.

Hadi jealous of us, says Amanah deputy president

Spinnot: "PAS said it will file legal proceedings against Sarawak Report within a month over an article that claimed its leaders received RM90 million in political contributions in return for turning its back on former opposition allies.

Party president Abdul Hadi Awang said that the party will file the lawsuit in the United Kingdom.

Hadi, the British Council in Kuala Lumpur may assist you if you still having problem finding a Queen's Counsel.

OneVoice: Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub, don't be arrogant or over-confident, as PAS is still PAS, and one of the better respected parties with a long history in Malaysia.

At the next GE you will be slaughtered at the polls, and if you win one seat, it has to be a seat the DAP, your masters, give to you.

Anonymous 1816381470753461: At best Hadi is an ulama, not a politician. I think he is in the wrong business. Hadi is going to drag PAS to a new low. Progressive-thinking PAS members should kick him out of the party.
