Mukhriz Mahathir said his party will suggest a two-term limit for the prime minister if it can succeed in taking over Putrajaya at the next general election.

"Insya'allah, if we succeed with the permission of Allah and the support of you all, if we can set up government after the 14th general election, we will suggest that the duration of the prime minister be limited to two terms and not exceeding 10 years."

"That is enough, many countries practice this,"," the Jerlun assemblyperson said at an event titled 'Malaysia Bersatu bersama Mukhriz' in Shah Alam last night.

"However, after this there may be people who would say, 'Dr Mahathir Mohamad had been prime minister for 22 years, and it wasn't an issue then'.

"Perhaps it was okay then, but in today's age we have already been bitten by Najib," said Mukhriz, the son of the long-running former prime minister.

As such, it should certainly be a practice for one to hold the prime minister’s post for a maximum of two terms only, added Mukhriz.

And should this really become the norm, the former Kedah menteri besar believes that scandals, such as those involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and SRC International, as well as the RM2.6 billion donation in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank account, would not recur.

However, should such instances be repeated, Mukhriz is confident that the party’s constitution would overcome them.

“We will take prompt action so that it doesn not become a bigger problem that will burden the rakyat,” he stressed.

Apart from a two-term limit for the prime minister, the Ayer Hitam assemblyperson said those who hold positions in the party should also be subjected to term limits.

“One should be allowed to hold positions for only three terms. One term will run for three years, therefore the maximum time would be nine years.

“This is so that there will be new faces taking up positions in the party,” Mukhriz added.
