Over 100 taxi drivers gathered in front of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) today to demand for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to outlaw ride-sharing services Uber and Grab.

"Today, we are handing over a memorandum (to the PMO) to ask that the prime minister focus more on the concerns of taxi drivers, specifically on the issues of Uber and Grab," Persatuan Pemandu Teksi Berwawasan Putrajaya dan Selangor chairperson Saari Omar told reporters outside the PMO in Putrajaya.

The group of over 100 taxi drivers, from all over the country, gathered outside the PMO with placards that read 'Ban Uber and Grab' and 'We love PM, help us' among many others.

They also chanted at the steps of the PMO, shouting "PM ban Uber and Grab", "Outlaw Uber and Grab" as well as "Help us, PM".

While waiting for five of their representatives to hand over the memorandum to the PMO, the group of taxi drivers also sang the national anthem and the patriotic song 'Inilah Barisan Kita'.

This was the culmination of a half-day event, which started in the morning with the taxi drivers marching from Jalan Duta to the Kuala Lumpur courthouse complex to receive the decision on The Land Public Transport Commission's (Spad) bid to strike out the taxi drivers' suit against them.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court allowed the application by Spad over a technicality, according to Saari.

He said that the taxi drivers intend to appeal the decision.

Late last year, the taxi drivers had filed a suit against Spad over Uber and Grab as they claimed these services were illegal.

Although Saari conceded that there is a small group of taxi drivers who do not abide by the industry standards, he insisted that they do not support such practices.

To them, he added, Uber and Grab drivers are working illegally as they do not abide by the industry rules and regulations.

There has been heightened tension between taxi drivers and the ride-sharing services since last year, as the taxi drivers claim these services are cutting into their income.

There has also been reported incidents where taxi drivers have harassed Uber and Grab drivers along with their passengers, with one incident in June where a Uber driver and his tourist passengers were attacked by a group of taxi drivers.
