Penang Umno again slams Guan Eng for refusing to quit as CM

Penang Umno today questioned why Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has yet to quit his post, or to go on leave, despite the court cases related to two corruption charges pending against him.

State Umno chief Zainal Abidin Osman said Lim's refusal to vacate his post would place "undue pressure" on the civil servants who have to testify as witnesses in court on the corruption charges.

Zainal noted that Lim is also facing a commital proceeding for contempt of court, filed against him by attorney-general Mohd Appandi Ali on Sept 21.

On June 30, Lim was charged with two corruption offences related to the purchase of his bungalow on Jalan Pinhorn, under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commision Act and Section 165 of the Penal Code.

His case is up for mention in the High Court in Penang tomorrow.

"Lim's act of uttering remarks to undermine the country's judiciary and justice system is not appropriate behaviour," said Zainal (photo), who also chairs the the Penang Federal Action Committee.

"It should not be done by someone who is a chief minister or a member of the state executive council. Lim has tarnished his position," he added in a statement today.

Penang Umno has urged Lim to resign from his CM’s post until the corruption case is settled in court.

"This is to ensure that the integrity and dignity of the post of the Penang chief minister are guaranteed and preserved, and not linked to any corruption case," Zainal said.

"An ethical and dignified chief minister will quit his post or go on leave when faced with such corruption charges.

"Even a civil servant needs to quit his post when slapped with similar charges," he said, adding that it appeared that "Lim loves his post too much" to let it go.

"Penangites can judge for themselves if Lim is a person who is crazy for posts and power."
