BN has arrived at a consensus regarding PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's private member's bill seeking to amend Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, also known as Act 355.

However, Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor declined to reveal what the decision was.

"As far as we're concerned, whatever decision we made is in consensus, so it was discussed and we have got a decision so you wait and see," he told reporters after opening the Enterwip 2.0 and Technofest Entrepreneurship Convention 2016 at PWTC in Kuala Lumpur today.

Previously, BN component parties MCA, MIC and Gerakan had strongly opposed the bill, with their top leaders vowing to resign if the bill is passed.

Hadi’s bill seeks to strengthen the syariah courts, which is currently limited to meting out punishments of a maximum fine of RM5,000, three years' jail or six strokes of the rotan.

The bill is also referred to as the "Hudud Bill" as it would ultimately pave the way for the partial implementation of the Islamic penal code, specifically in PAS-ruled Kelantan which had already passed an enactment to that effect.

Under the enactment, punishments using the rotan ranges from 40 strokes to 100 strokes.

In the last session of the parliamentary sitting, the government had moved a motion to prioritise Hadi's bill, though the Marang MP requested for the debate to be postponed to the next parliamentary sitting, beginning on Oct 17.

MCA president Liow Tiong Lai, Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong and MIC president S Subramaniam have all vowed to resign from the Cabinet if the Hudud Bill is passed.
