A movement claiming to represent Umno grassroots said that it, along with four NGOs, will be organising a peaceful rally to shadow the pro-electoral reform Bersih 5 rally.

Gerakan Akar Umbi Umno Malaysia (Gaum) chairperson Zulkarnain Mahdar said their rally will be at the same time and place as Bersih 5, and further details will be forthcoming at a press conference that the group will hold later.

"It is time for the rakyat to practice democratic culture, where each and every Malaysian has the right and should be allowed to voice out their opinions about any issue in the open and without restrictions," he said in a statement.

Gaum said that the movement and its allies will bring 3,000 members on the rally day. They will also try to talk to red shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos, to coordinate a joint action plan on the day.

Jamal already said that he and his red shirts will be on the ground to oppose Bersih's yellow shirts, unlike Gaum's more peaceful alternate plan.

Zulkarnain explained that their initial plan was to march together with Bersih 5 rally goers at several locations like the Sogo building towards Dataran Merdeka.

"We promise to march peacefully and hope that the Bersih 5 participants will walk with us during the march. We also hope that there will be no extreme provocation on the day,"

However, Zulkarnain explained that unlike Bersih 5 participants who are protesting alleged electoral abuses, they will be there to protest alleged corruption in federal opposition-held states like Penang and Selangor, which he said needs to be highlighted.
