Most public housing in S'gor in sorry state, minister says

The majority of Public Housing Programme (PPR) houses and flats for the urban poor in Selangor face serious maintenance problems.

Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Noh Omar said the residents faced problems such as leaky roofs, faulty elevators and clogged pipes and these should be handled and solved by the respective local authorities.

"For example, if a joint management body (JMB) of the PPR flats collect a fee of RM38 per month per unit for 160 units, the amount of RM6,080 is still insufficient to bear the maintenance cost.

"So, the state government which is responsible for collecting assessment rates, should look into this problem and use the billions collected to help the people," he told a press conference after a visit to the Tasek Tambahan PKNS Flats.

Noh, who is also Selangor Umno liaison committee chairperson, said he saw that maintenance was a big problem after a series of visits to the PPR flats and houses in the state since assuming the ministerial portfolio more than three months ago.

Noh said he did not have full power to instruct the local authorities what to do as they were under the jurisdiction of the state government.

"The local authorities have the responsibility of coordinating and managing the PPR houses and flats. Selangor state is run by the opposition, so I don't have full authority to help solve the problems," he added.

During the visit, Noh approved an allocation of RM400,000 for the residents of Tasek Tambahan PKNS Flats to repair the damaged roof.
