KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.
Bags of cash for Najib?
Citing leaks from investigating authorities, Sarawak Report said bank accounts purportedly belonging to PM Najib Abdul Razak received RM3.4 million in deposits in early 2015, believed to have been banked in with cash, leaving no trace of its origins.
Bank statements published by Sarawak Report indicate SRC International CEO Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil was the authorised signatory for the accounts.
Malaysiakini cannot reproduce these bank statements, nor independently verify the the documents, but has contacted Ambank and the Prime MInister's Office for their response to this claim.
Najib has consistently denied abusing public funds for private gain, while Sarawak Report critics say the whistleblower website is supported by Najib's political enemies.
Mahathir now dithers on whether Muhyiddin is fit to be PM
In an exclusive interview with Malaysiakini, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) pro-tem president Muhyiddin Yassin is fit to lead the party, but whether he can lead the government is a different matter.
This came after he said late last month that the former deputy prime minister would likely be the PM if he gets party and coalition support, and the opposition wins the 14th general election.
Another Umno minister distances himself from red shirts
Cabinet minister and Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar stresses that the anti-Bersih group, the red shirts, have nothing to do with Umno, despite its leader Jamal Md Yunos being a Selangor Umno strongman and the party’s Sungai Besar division chief.
Meanwhile, Jamal claims that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is gagging him, with his Facebook account temporarily suspended after he decried fake accounts using his name that made "seditious" postings.
This includes the posting claiming the Nov 19 Bersih 5 rally will be a repeat of the May 13, 1969, race riots, complete with "flying parangs". Gerakan Youth lodged a police report over it, while police are investigating.
Separately, the Bersih activist kicked and pelted with eggs by red shirts in Sabak Bernam on Saturday thanked the police for intervening when he was attacked.
Other Kinibites
Outgoing United States ambassador to Malaysia Joseph Yun said Malaysia has nothing to worry about if Donald Trump becomes president, as the US Congress will keep the seemingly anti-Muslim Trump in check.
Defending Gerakan legal bureau chief Baljit Singh, the party's Wanita wing said he was advocating more female candidates in the news report he was quoted as having said Gerakan should field "young, sexy women" to boost its polls chances.
MACC sources said the anti-graft body has yet to find evidence to tie former Umno veep Shafie Apdal to the mega corruption case involving the Sabah Water Department, where more than RM100 million was seized. A total 127 land grants worth RM30 million were also seized yesterday.
