MCA president Liow Tiong Lai today stopped short of declaring whether Umno should take action against its members allegedly involved in incidents of attacks against the ongoing Bersih 5 nationwide convoy.

"I have put my position very clearly on this...," said Liow during a press conference at Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur after officiating Selangor Wanita MCA's annual general assembly, without elaborating further.

He said this when asked for comments on alleged involvement of Umno Youth leaders in the latest incident at Giant supermarket in Kuala Selangor yesterday, which saw several journalists being harassed and threatened while on duty.

A Malaysiakini photographer was punched on the shoulder and heckled with the derogatory "Cina babi" (Chinese pig), while another journalist from The Star was forced to delete footage recorded on a mobile phone.

Umno Youth exco member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah told Malaysiakini that his group just wanted to have a meal at a nearby fast food joint where Bersih supporters were distributing fliers.

Liow earlier said the party would like to sever all ties with the Umno-linked red shirts movement, following its latest clash with Bersih 5 supporters.

"We would like to sever ties with the red shirts. (They) have nothing to do with BN or MCA.

"This is, when you have yellow shirts (Bersih)... the repercussion is you get the red shirts," said Liow.

The "yellow shirts" refers to the coalition for free and fair elections Bersih, which has been conducting nationwide convoys to drum up awareness of its Bersih 5 rally on Nov 19.

Commenting further, Liow stressed that MCA was against "road confrontational attitudes" and urged the police to take immediate action.

At the same time, he however claimed that the confrontations were partly due to the NGO's agenda being "hijacked" by DAP and opposition parties.

"They are sowing the seeds of hatred and this will create disaster in this country. There will be no peace in the country," he said.

The red shirts movement is led by Umno Sungai Besar chief Jamal Md Yunos.

Jamal had reportedly apologised for any intimidation towards the press, but insisted that it was ultimately Bersih's fault.

The Star previously reported that police are investigating the anti-Bersih group under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
