Alas, ‘ugly duckling’ M’sia may not become a swan

YOURSAY | ‘Everyone I know loves M’sia but not the ‘some M’sians are more equal than others’ syndrome.’

Irish writer: Some Malaysians are more equal than others

SteveOh: Malaysia ought to be among the best countries in the world but for the bad managers, like the operators of outlets with excellent food but offensive manners, dishonest work practices and poor hygiene. It is one big lost opportunity.

Singapore, in my humble opinion, is the overall best country in the world with Malaysia a bigger and better version, but for the corrupt leaders who invested in themselves and not the country, they who with unchecked power thought the country was their private manor and they could conduct risky experiments that lost much public resources that ought to have been used for basic developments like better education, affordable housing, and other amenities we find so taken-for-granted in countries that have overtaken Malaysia.

Everyone I know loves Malaysia but not the ‘some Malaysians are more equal than others’ syndrome that has ruined the country. Until there is radical change in the 'first world infrastructure, third-world mindset', the 'ugly duckling' will not become a swan.

Vijay47: Freelance writer Marc de Faoite, I am glad you generally see Malaysia through such rose-tinted lenses, we would agree with you those things that gave you pleasure living here. But item 3, that bit about government and its rule via "ethno-centric political parties" is somewhat misleading, to put it mildly.

To the uninitiated, it would suggest that the coalition allows voice to the lesser parties, that differing opinions are recognised. You left unsaid the reality of governance in Malaysia - Umno and only Umno calls the shots and the others faithfully nod their heads in devoted agreement.

In the meantime, enjoy the thosai, char koay teow, and nasi lemak.

Kangkung: The writer left out two crucial points in his article:

1. Malaysia has Malaysian Official 1 (MO1). Without MO1, Malaysia would be one of the greatest countries in Asia.

2. Some people live on animal feed and do not take normal food. They live on the spoils from MO1's table.

SSG: I am so sorry, but I do not consider you qualified to give your opinion about Malaysia since you have been here for only 10 (‘short’) years.

Please ask those whose forefathers came here more than 100 years ago and are now in their 5th and 6th generation.

They are the ones who can compare and comment about present-day conditions. I do apologise if you take this as an offence.

Spinnot: "His (De Faoite’s) eighth point was Malaysia has world-class infrastructure."

Correction: West Malaysia has world-class infrastructure, East Malaysia, particularly Sabah, has third-world infrastructure.

The Analyser: De Faoite’s observations are very superficial. If that's all he has to say after living here for 10 years with a local wife, then all I can say is that he hasn't been very observant.

Everyone is qualified to give their own opinion. That's why it’s an opinion and not a statement of fact. It’s my opinion that the people who have lived here for generations are less likely to be able to see Malaysia through clear eyes than is an occasional visitor.

For example, established Malaysians don’t know how fear-filled is this nation because they are so frightened. Malaysians don’t know how racist they are because everyone is racist. Malaysians don’t know how deluded they are because they live their delusions.

Malaysian don’t know how little common sense they have, how little respect they show, or how profoundly ignorant they are because lack of common sense, lack of respect and ignorance are so widespread they are regarded as the norm.

Muhyiddin goes from being PM’s right-hand man to obscure MP

Inworldnotof: It doesn't matter where you sit. It's the values you live by and who you are and become.

No matter how short-sighted and unwise at times Muhyiddin Yassin was DPM and education minister, he made a stand that puts him on the right side of history.

Whether he did it too late or not, let the Almighty judge - he spoke up and questioned when it mattered.

Silence from fellow cabinet members equates to abetment, irresponsibility, covering-up, failure to discharge their duty to nation and citizen. Simple as that.

Why do you think the rest of the world is clamouring for truth and justice, and wondering at the huge ostrich Malaysia has become?

Long Ngah: Does it really matter where you are seated? What matters is that the people's voice should be delivered well in Parliament. That's what people want. As MPs, they should carry out the manifesto they promised to the people.

Anonymous_3f6d: This is so wrong - sidelined for fighting for the truth while the allegedly corrupted guys get the front seats.

Headhunter: That's politics for you. Someone sitting in the highest seat today could also be squatting in a small prison cell tomorrow.

Remember that, especially all of you allegedly corrupt politicians.
