Youths want tax relief for sporting club memberships, too

The Youth and Sports Ministry will discuss with the Finance Ministry on widening the scope of the lifestyle tax relief as announced in Budget 2017.

Its minister Khairy Jamaluddin said among the initiatives under the lifestyle tax relief was gym membership.

"Some youths want the tax relief not to be limited to gym memberships only but to be expanded to cover memberships in other clubs such as futsal, and others.

"I will raise the matter with the Finance Ministry and I will discuss it soon as I am still waiting for details on the lifestyle tax relief," he said.

He said this to reporters after handing over prizes to the winners in the 2016 Rembau Challenge and Fun Run Rembau Challenge at Dataran Rembau today.

Also present was the Undang of Rembau, Muhamad Sharip Othman and state Human Capital, Youth and Sports Committee chairperson, Zaifulbahri Idris.

In the 2017 Budget tabled by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is also Minister of Finance, last Friday, the government announced a tax relief of up to RM2,500 for the purchase of reading materials, computers, sports
equipment, printed newspapers, smartphones and tablets, Internet subscription and gym membership.

Khairy said the lifestyle tax relief was among the measures to ease the burden of youths who were currently facing the high cost of living on low starting salaries.

Meanwhile, more than 2,000 participants of various ages took part in the Fun Run Rembau Challenge, namely, a four kilometres run, and more than 600 local and foreign participants took part in the 2016 Rembau Challenge.
