Lawyer and activist Siti Kasim and five others gathered outside Parliament today to protest against PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's controversial 'hudud' motion.

The group held placards which read "#RejectAct355 I'm a Muslim and I don't support it", "Islam is beautiful" and "Malays are not lackeys", among others.

The group also called for efforts to be made to make it easier for single mothers to get alimony in court.

"We are a group of concerned citizens. We want the MPs to know that there are Malays who are not duped by Hadi," Siti Kasim told reporters.

Hadi's motion, which is fifth on the order paper, is about his Private Member's Bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act.

Critics fear that if this amendment is made, it would lead to the implementation of hudud.

Siti said countries that implement religious laws have a tendency to become failed states.

She also criticised the judiciary for deferring cases involving Islam by saying they had no jurisdiction on the matter.

The six held placards for about half an hour, waving them at passing cars, before they left at 10am.

Siti said they would return to protest at Parliament a second time to hand over a memorandum.

However, she said, a date for this second protest had yet to be determined.
