Two charged with soliciting for, supporting IS terrorist group

Two men were charged in the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu today with soliciting for and giving support to the Islamic State terrorist group.

However, no plea was recorded from Saifullah Sulaiman, 27, and Md Ayub Idris, 32, pending consent to transfer their cases to the High Court.

Saifullah faces two charges of soliciting for and giving support to IS via a 'Telegram' telephone application in front of the Koperasi Pekerja-Pekerja Kerajaan Sabah Bhd (Kopeks) in Jalan Ikan Juara Satu, Kompleks Sadong Jaya in Kota Kinabalu.

He was charged under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code with soliciting support for the terrorist group on March 29 via Telegram under the name Ahadun Ahad alias Pornade Land.

He was also charged under Section 130J(1)(b) of the Penal Code with giving support on June 25-29 via Telegram for an act of terrorism involving the use of explosives with the intention to continue the struggle of an ideology reasonably considered as an intent to threaten the public in Malaysia.

Each charge carries the penalty of imprisonment for life or an imprisonment for a term not exceeding 30 years or with a fine and shall also be liable to forfeiture of any property used or intended to be used in committing the offence, upon conviction.

Ayub was charged under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code with soliciting support for the terrorist group via Telegram under the name Shagrath alias Ihsahn.

He was accused of committing the offence on March 30 at B16-2-12, Taman Telipok Ria in Tuaran.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus set Nov 21 for mention and denied bail for both of them.

The duo were represented by counsel Ram Singh, who was assisted by Timothy Daut, while DPP Aida Fatimah Abd Jabar appeared for the prosecution.
