In targeting ‘pro-Bersih’ businesses, gov’t holds democracy to ransom

YOURSAY | [‘How to check if the lawyers are Bersih sympathisers? They wear yellow boxers, is it?’

EPU minister to track down 'pro-Bersih' businesses

Trueglitter: The desperation of Minister in the PM’s Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan, emerging with his vehement threats to blacklist companies that sponsor the Bersih movement in support of Utusan Malaysia's suggestion, is clearly evident and should outrightly be condemned.

As a minister, his ominous and high-handed threats would be regarded as an abject decline in fair governance that is deemed outrageously opportunistic with the view of holding the nation to ransom when it will be dictated by the obnoxious and dictatorial powers of BN government.

To restore the people's democratic rights and dignity, the right-thinking rakyat must ascend the heights of our collective endeavours to determinedly and shout loudly that we will not be daunted or intimidated by Abdul Rahman's rhetoric.

On a more positive note, it is clearly indicative the admirable and praise-deserving works carried out by the dedicated and tireless supporters of Bersih 5 rally is now bearing fruits, hence the unacceptable threats by the emboldened minister.

Gerard Lourdesamy: This is democracy ala Umno-BN in Malaysia. Yet Abdul Rahman has the audacity to claim that we are a very fair, just and democratic country that warrants global praise.

So, BN defends the welfare of the people who incidentally pay taxes to this government on the basis of their support of the ruling party? Why not just say that if you do not vote for BN, leave the country?

No wonder the opposition walked out during PM Najib Razak's Budget speech in Parliament. Parliament is indeed a circus with a speaker who is the government ring master.

Why respect an institution whose primary role now is to insulate the prime minister and his wife from all forms of criticism and to support a state-sanctioned cover-up of the corruption, abuses and misdeeds of the leadership?

Why bother with Parliament when the speaker does not permit questions and debates on fundamental issues affecting the nation, its economy and future because of his shallow and distorted understanding of the practice and procedures?

Anonymous 1890491455255851: Abdul Rahman is surely making the BN government sound and look like a tyrannical dictatorship.

You do not punish people or organisations that support fair elections, good governance and anti-corruption. Aren't these vital to the success of a country? Is BN against these values?

By attacking Bersih's cause and those who support good values, they are showing themselves to be against those very same values.

KSD: Those of you who are shocked by Abdul Rahman's statement need a reality check.

It's important for Malaysians to understand that there is no democracy in Malaysia, only a pretend one that's created for appearance sake. Only when Malaysians understand this will they know what action to take.

There were murmurings of discontent when the opposition walked out last week. Sure, when that happened in real democracy, it would be shameful.

But in a dictatorship, true democrats should not even lend credence to Parliament by being there. This government will never be toppled if everyone play by its rules.

Just a Malaysian: In this country, justice, truth, fairness and all good values are under attacked by our very own elected leaders.

How long can this type of bullying continue? How much more suffering, threats and stupidity can the rakyat bear? Who and when will someone in authority has a prick of conscience and do the right thing?

Sarawakian: Upon reading your statement, Abdul Rahman, I made an immediate donation to Bersih. Thanks for reminding me.

I will also look up Parti Warisan and make a donation too. I hope former Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal will kick you out of Kota Belud come GE14.

Anonymous_3f49: When a minister responded to the whims and fancies of a paper like Utusan, is there anything more that the rakyat need to know?

Gov't also looking to blacklist pro-Bersih law firms, says Rahman

Anonymous 706151436780066: How to check if the lawyers are Bersih sympathisers? They wear yellow boxers, is it?

What about blacklisting petrol stations that supply petrol for these lawyers' cars? Abdul Rahman will also blacklist the grocery shops that sell eggs and ikan bilis to Bersih T-shirt wearing customers?

Then might as well disconnect electricity and water to the homes of Bersih supporters.

Bumiputhran: Abdul Rahman, I am an individual citizen. I have numerous contracts with the Umno-ruled government to provide a number of service frequently, like the provision of medical services and I also provide my presence to Bersih as fervent supporter of Bersih's goals.

Abdul Rahman, by extension of your argument, are you going to refuse medical care to me?

Worldly Wise: Government-linked companies are funded by taxpayers’ money. Such money ought not to be used to keep those who may be corrupt and thieving politicians in power.

Taxpayers’ money ought to be used for the common good. It is apparently now being used as if the money actually belongs to persons in authority.

Hang Babeuf: "All great events in history happen twice - the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce."

And so it is that Horst Wessel now comes back as Abdul Rahman.
