PAS said its president Abdul Hadi Awang met Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak this week as part of the party's role as a "constructive opposition party".

PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan said among the matters discussed was combatting "slander" by foreign news agencies.

"An important subject in the meeting was Hadi's recommendation for regional news cooperation, particularly to combat extremist media with their false news and slander that has become widespread of late...," said Nasrudin in a statement.

He added this included dealing with "aggression by the media and foreign news agencies that produce news tailored for their hidden agenda".

However Nasrudin did not specify what the media referred to were or elaborate on the alleged cases.

Putrajaya has repeatedly accused the international media, including the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) of "slander" and trying to destabilise the Malaysian government.

This is after they highlighted the 1MDB scandal and multi-billion ringgit deposits in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts.

Najib had denied any wrongdoing or taking public funds for personal gain.

Hadi also discussed the social media and how it is the responsibility of all quarters to verify the veracity of news uploaded on cyberspace.

Nasrudin said the meeting took place at Salleh's office at Angkasapuri. Accompanying Hadi on his visit were his political secretary Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad.

He said they also discussed important issues concerning the good of the country and the rakyat.

"Among the topics, Hadi as the vice-chief of the International Union of Muslim Scholars has offered to help resolve the issue of the frequent kidnappings off Sabah's coasts, stressing the need for a holistic solution to the matter," he said.

Nasrudin said the visit showcases PAS' "constructive" approach to being an opposition "party that builds", that can still meet with the government to give its views and criticisms as well as mutual assistance in the shared responsibility of solving problems that plague the nation.
