Adam Adli optimistic, but ready for jail if final appeal tomorrow fails

With a possible jail sentence looming tomorrow, activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim is optimistic.

Even so, he said, he is prepared if the verdict in his final appeal against his sedition charge will force him to spend time behind bars.

Adam Adli's optimism comes from the Court of Appeal's May verdict to overturn a nine-month jail sentence imposed on social activist Hishamuddin Rais for sedition.

"Hisham Rais was eventually freed. So I am optimistic, but at the same time even if I lose, I am ready.

"This case has been going on for some time so I've been ready for awhile. Same with my family, they are always supportive," he told Malaysiakini.

Then a 24-year-old student activist, Adam Adli was charged on May 23, 2013, for allegedly calling for the toppling of an elected government, during a forum on May 13 the same year.

On Sept 19, 2014, the Sessions Court found him guilty under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and sentenced him to 12-months jail.

Adam Adli failed to set aside his sedition conviction in February this year, but the High Court ruled he would only need to pay a RM5,000 fine instead of having to serve a year in jail.

High Court judge Ab Karim Ab Rahman said the one-year jail term imposed was excessive considering that the appellant's speech did not result in any negative reactions or cause untoward incidents in society.

The Court of Appeal will tomorrow hear the prosecution's final appeal in Adam Adli's case.
