Parti Warisan Sabah president Shafie Apdal today defended his right as a parliamentarian to raise issues surrounding state-investor 1MDB during debates in the Dewan Rakyat.

"Questioning parliamentarians for what is said in Parliament should not happen.

"It (Dewan Rakyat) is a place for free speech and debates to uphold the Federal Constitution and rule of law," the Semporna MP told reporters outside Bukit Aman police headquarters this morning.

More so, he pointed out, when the issues being debated are matters that could affect people's lives.

The former Umno minister was earlier questioned, for about an hour, on his Budget 2017 debate speech that the Parliament speaker said breached the Official Secrets Act.

"It's an intimidation of parliamentarians' right to speak.

"Of course, there are conditions, such as rulers and certain rights," Shafie said.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar had previously said investigations would also be carried out for alleged sedition.

Commenting further, Shafie said he is well aware of existing limits on matters that could not be touched on.

"We know what is seditious and what is not," he stressed.

Shafie is the third MP to be called up on the matter, after former finance minister II Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah and former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

All three are being investigated after Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia said the speeches they made in the House on 1MDB breached the oath of secrecy they took as cabinet ministers.

Shafie, who was sacked from cabinet in July 2015, last week questioned how Pandikar could know if any of the speeches breached the OSA, since he was not privy to cabinet discussions.
