Newly-minted Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) vice-president Abdul Rashid Rahman has not ruled out contesting in the next general election.

"Definitely. If you want to change the country, you have to be in power.

"If I feel I could win in certain areas, why not? I will choose a place where I can win," the former Election Commission chief told reporters when met outside Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur.

Citing Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, 91, as an example, Abdul Rashid, 74, said he is not too old for active politics.

Abdul Rashid also revealed he would use his knowledge garnered during his tenure as EC chief from 2000 to 2008 to assist Bersatu in facing the polls.

"Whatever knowledge I have, I will use… not just against the government, but for the good of the country." 

He said he would not be able to pass judgement if the Sept 15 redelineation proposal by EC had an element of gerrymandering, by merely looking at the redelineation information published in the newspaper.

"Definitely I will look into that," he said.

However, Abdul Rashid said he would not participate in the Nov 19 Bersih 5 rally due to health reasons.

"Rallies are for young people... That's not the kind of rally (that I would join). If it is a sit-down rally, then it is okay. I have to take care of my health." 

He said he joined Bersatu because he wanted a platform to fight for justice and proper management for the country.

"I see a lot of damages that has been done to the country, we were very proud in the past that the country had developed very much."
