Hungry red-shirts? Lots of food stalls, says Bersih
Red-shirts need not worry about going "hungry" if they hold a counter-rally against Bersih in Kuala Lumpur this Saturday, as there are many food stalls around, the electoral watchdog said .
Bersih committee member Hishamuddin Rais said this in response to red-shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos who yesterday said he cannot guarantee the actions of his "hungry" supporters during the Bersih 5 rally, as Jamal will not be providing food.
"I think if his (Jamal) supporters are hungry, there are a lot of warung (food stalls) on that day. It has always been the experience of Bersih 1, 2, 3 and 4.
"So there will be no problems of getting water, nasi kandar or nasi bungkus at all," Hishamuddin Rais told a press conference today at Bersih office.
He said that the "hungry" red-shirts can buy the water or food if they feel hungry during the rally.
He also refuted the action taken by traders who filed an application for an injunction against Bersih this Saturday's rally.
He said that the traders' business would be roaring instead of suffering losses during the rally.
"Their business will be growing on that day," said Hishamuddin Rais.
Bersih provides 1,400 security personnel
Meanwhile, Bersih deputy chairperson Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari urged all Malaysians to be brave to come out despite all the threats and accusations by Jamal.
"If you look at all his accusations, it is amazing that he is still out there and allowed to say this kind of word.
"From 'blood' statement to 'parang terbang' to 'cincang', all these words are definitely not something Bersih is promoting," said Shahrul.
Shahrul also announced that Bersih would provide a security team comprising 1,400 personnel to handle all incidents of confrontation, violence and general security.
"Personnel from the Bersih Security Team will be clad in purple and stationed throughout the three main areas: Bangsar LRT, Masjid Negara and Dataran Merdeka.
"We also have an Urgent Arrest Team on standby, in case of an arrest, SMS your full name, IC number and place of arrest to 011-21376814 or 011-39376684.
"In the event of a medical emergency, our 160-strong medical team will be on hand to assist, SMS the emergency hotline at 011-39440069," said Shahrul.
Bersih secretariat manager Mandeep Singh said Bersih had prepared nearly 30,000 Bersih T-shirts and around 2,000 or 3,000 are left now.
