The Malaysian ringgit is still widely accepted by money changers in overseas markets contrary to social media rumours saying otherwise.

In neighbouring Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, moneychangers report brisk transactions in the local currency, with some reporting a lack of supply of the ringgit due to heavy demand for it.

And early this morning, Tabung Haji denied social media reports the ringgit was not accepted in Makkah and Madinah.

The Pilgrims Fund Board said a check with its office in Jeddah showed that the ringgit was accepted by most moneychangers.

On the forex market today, the ringgit was at 4.43 to the US dollar as at 4pm compared with 4.417 at yesterday’s closing.

In Singapore, money changers dismissed speculation that they had run out of supply of the ringgit, saying that there was adequate supply of the Malaysian currency.

In Thailand, the ringgit was still widely accepted by the country’s moneychangers.

Several money changers in Bangkok said there was no problem exchanging the ringgit with other currencies.

Supply was ample, they said.

In Indonesia, the ringgit remained actively traded albeit at a weaker exchange rate of RM3.20 for 10,000 rupiah.

Several moneychangers in Jakarta were still actively buying and selling the ringgit.
