Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) said the party does not want those who are believed to have attacked one of its parliamentarians to be detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

"On behalf of Amanah, I do not agree and strongly protest if the government wants to use Sosma against the rioters.

"Amanah is consistently against Sosma's use against anyone, even our political enemies," said the party's legal bureau chief Hanipa Maidin in a statement today.

Hanipa was responding to Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Muhamad who did not dismiss the use of the security law against those who incited riot when they allegedly attacked Amanah Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad on Thursday.

He said that while they do not agree with using physical violence against MPs, what more on parliament grounds and against one of their own, they do not agree if Sosma is used against the rioters.

"This is because Sosma is a cruel Act which does not dispense any justice to anyone detained under it," he said.

Hanipa also thanked Nur Jazlan who also criticised the perpetrators and vowed action against them, including the MP who brought the alleged rioters in.

On Thursday, a group of men and women accosted Khalid who was on his way into parliament, punches were thrown and security personnel had to whisk the Amanah MP away to safety.

11 men and women were arrested yesterday over the matter, and are being investigated for rioting.
