Zunar released; Maria vigil attacked; Umno warlords 'a problem'

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Zunar released, after one day in remand

Cartoonist Zunar was released after a day's remand, following his arrest under the Sedition Act.

Police initially sought a four-day remand to investigate him for sedition, for allegedly criticising the government through his cartoons.

However, Gerakan Hapuskan Anti-Hasutan said according to amendments to the Sedition Act, criticising the government is no longer an offence under the Act.

Maria vigil disrupted, police intervene

Police nabbed several hecklers who tried to use force to disrupt a vigil for detained Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, at Padang Kota Lama in Penang.

Maria's lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan tweets inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar to seek access to her client before Maria's habeas corpus hearing, due tomorrow, after official requests do not work.

This comes as Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (Centhra) chief executive Azril Mohd Amin said "militant LGBTs" used Bersih 5 to further their agenda.

Meanwhile, landscape architect Ng Sek San launched a campaign urging the public to contribute keys - or "freedom keys" as he calls it - for a mobile monument to mark Bersih's 10th anniversary.

Zahid laments Umno warlords

Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party's "warlords" are its biggest problem, as these "warlords" seek political rewards, including electoral candidacy even when they are not likely to win.

Separately, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said he enjoys keeping people guessing over the 14th general election date.

Najib also said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will fail in his bid to oust him as prime minister, since Mahathir no longer has power over Umno, which he had ruled by fear.
