The Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry is piloting an urban farming project at a low-cost flat (PPR) in a bid to help the tenants reduce their household expenses.

The pilot project will take place at PPR Lembah Subang Satu next year, minister Noh Omar said.

"If one PPR area has 300 flats, just imagine if each were to plant three chili plants. If they are not selling them, they can consume the chilli themselves,” Noh said.

He said this while visiting the Garden District at the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture & Agro-tourism (MAHA 2016) agriculture fair in Serdang today.

The Garden District exhibition aims to encourage visitors to plant their own food, to reduce their household bills.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek, who was also present at the ceremony, said the ministry would discuss this matter with Noh's ministry.

Shabery said the Agrifulture and Agro-based Industry Ministry’s urban farming competitions held in Kuala Lumpur before this could also be expanded nationally.

MAHA 2016 runs until Dec 11 and has attracted more than three million visitors since opening its doors on Dec 4.

Themed 'Our Food Our Future', it focuses on food security and sovereignty.
