Najib: KL Rohingya rally caught OIC's attention

Najib Abdul Razak said the strong voice of Malaysians at the Ummah Solidarity Gathering for the Rohingyas at the Titiwangsa Stadium last Sunday (Dec 4) has attracted the attention of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The prime minister said following the assembly, the OIC would hold a meeting at the foreign ministers' level in the near future to discuss the Rohingya issue.

As such, Malaysia would deal with the OIC secretariat regarding the meeting that would be held to ensure the Rohingya issue could be addressed in the best way possible.

"The assembly that we held last Sunday was heard by the OIC and they will hold a meeting to discuss what inflicted the ethnic Rohingyas," he told reporters after launching the 10th anniversary of Iskandar Malaysia in EduCity, Johor today.

The gathering, which was participated by Najib and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as well as PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, also saw non-governmental organisations (NGO) and community and national political figures joining in as a show of solidarity against the atrocities committed against the Rohingyas.

Meanwhile, the European Rohingya Council (ERC) thanked Najib and Malaysians for their solidarity with Rohingya to end genocide in Myanmar and urged other world leaders to show similar moral responsibilities and leadership.

"World leaders should not allow the genocide of Rohingya to be completed by Myanmar Security Force," the ERC said in a statement.

It appealed to world leaders "from west to east and from north to south, to come out and show moral responsibility and leadership to end the genocide of more than one million Rohingya, and to practically implement the 'Never Again' slogan.

The ERC said that Myanmar security forces started collective punishment of Rohingya in response to an attack on border guard outpost by unknown assailants on Oct 9.

It claimed that the security forces were involved in summary killings, arbitrary arrests, gang rapes in hundreds and in deliberate destructions of Rohingya villages displacing more than 40,000 who are currently in desperate need of food, shelter and medicine.

However, Myanmar's government has rejected such claims, saying that the allegations were "absolutely not true," reports said.

ERC also pointed out that access of independent media and humanitarian aid were also completely blocked.

The ERC was launched in Esbjerg, Denmark, in October 2012 at a roundtable, which had brought together concerned Rohingya activists residing across Europe.

These activists unanimously agreed to form a Europe-wide Rohingya organisation to strive for the cause of the Rohingya minority who are on the verge of extermination from Myanmar's Arakan State.

According to the ERC's website during the roundtable more than 100 Rohingya youths with vision, passion, solidarity, hope, unity and perseverance decided to form the umbrella organisation named ERC.
