The coalition of university students Kesatuan Mahasiswa Malaysia won this year’s Suaram Human Rights Award.

It was presented with the award at the launch of Suaram's 2016 Human Rights Report in Kuala Lumpur today.

Kesatuan Mahasiswa Malaysia chairperson Anis Syafiqah was in attendance to receive the award from Suaram adviser Kua Kia Soong.

"Hopefully (this award) will be a stepping stone for more students and youths to rise up and play their role in society," Anis said in a Facebook posting later.

Anis is one of four students facing disciplinary hearings for taking part in the ‘TangkapMO1’ rally in August, which demanded the arrest of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for his role in the 1MDB controversy.

If found guilty, she may be given a warning, a fine, face suspension or may even be expelled from Universiti Malaya.

The hearing was held on Nov 30 and the decision is expected to be delivered tomorrow.

At the event earlier today, Kua said 2016 was the worst year for human rights in Malaysia, since Operation Lallang in 1987.
