What’s crippling the nation is not people engaging in illicit sex

YOURSAY | ‘It’s the corruption of one man, and the band of a 100 or so who keep the thief unchecked.’

Cop dies, another hurt in Jais raids

Goldee: The very core importance is corruption. Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) should conduct raids on those who indulge in corruption. And they must act without fear and favour.

They must also know which is more important - close proximity or corruption. Perhaps Jais is not interested or they are powerless when comes to corruption.

BB123: Jais and Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) receive RM1 billion budget every year. All they are thinking about are peeping and spying on people when the real problems of the country are completely ignored.

Maplesyrup: What is crippling this nation is not people engaging in illicit sex or extramarital sex, not yet... What is killing us is corruption.

Corruption of one man, and the band of a 100 or so who keep the thief unchecked. Don’t play God, let God do His job, please.

The Analyser: That Jais still exists is the single most significant failure of the Selangor government. It shows that they are nothing more than another agency of Islam... and that is the last thing that Malaysia needs at the moment.

Still, Jais will go down on the list of the Selangor government’s failures, which will ensure that Pakatan Rakyat never gets re-elected again.

Unafraid: What astounds me is the tacit almost servile acceptance of these kind of raids into the private lives of the individuals all in the name of religion. It appears to me that the kind of dominance over the minds of the people are almost total.

This speaks volumes to me. Don't these people have some oomph in them not to be dictated to and to be lorded over?

Just a Malaysian: Our country is in a mess. Our PM is accused of stealing public money. Our ringgit crashed. Our economy tanked, our youths cannot find good job, our cost of living shoots up, unemployment is climbing, many cannot buy a house, security is poor and gangsters are in charge.

And yet we spend time to catch a few individuals having a mistress or girlfriend. And the funny thing two of them are police officers. One died for nothing. How stupid can we get?

Report: M'sian Armed Forces chief in Myanmar to repair ties

Oxymoronictendencies: Are we to understand that our PM failed to verify the news on the Rohingyas being massacred?

If so, the pantomime conducted by Najib Abdul Razak and Abdul Hadi Awang by attending a protest rally against the Myanmar government is a national disgrace. More cheap politics at the expense of the truth?

Don't these so-called national leaders have the wherewithal to verify the truth from "false news". Or do they, like the new US President-elect Donald Trump, just rely on Facebook and Twitter for their international news, where the level of "false news" is now probably far greater than the real truth.

Thickskin: Can you imagine Xi Jinping joining a demonstration to protest against the discrimination of Chinese in our government and in the civil service?

Then China sending their top general to Malaysia to repair ties and be briefed on the racial composition of the Umno government and civil service. This is better than any comedy.

Mushiro: Has General Zulkifeli Mohd Zin gone to Myanmar to do damage control caused by Najib attending the anti-Myanmar rally. He will come back with a message that no human rights violations had taken place against Muslim Rohingya.

Robbed: Najib just put his foot in the mouth. Inadvertently Najib may have encouraged militants and local Islamic State groups to turn their attention to Myanmar for their jihad.

Datuks and Latuks

Vijay47: Datukship has fallen to such a level of disrepute that I simply cannot understand people lining up to pay to get such a dubious honour and in some cases, and deservedly get fleeced in the process.

The title has almost become a public joke and an acknowledgement of the recipient's shady activities. Often the worst are the wives - fat loathsome awfully-dressed women who preen over their husband's shameful label. And I am not talking about just the fattest one of them all.

What is equally surprising is that only in rare cases are the titles withdrawn; if they were dished out so liberally, they can just as easily be pulled back.

Writer Mariam Mokhtar suggests, kindly I may add, that police vetting may not be too thorough. That could be forgiven if it were due to sheer typical inefficiency but where datukships are the product of business transactions, why would some within the police force wish to be excluded?

LeftHandSide: It is a very naive idea to get the police to vet the datuk-wannabe. We need the police to be vetted as well.

Anonymous_3ef7: Those who are considered for Datukship, their names should be published in public so that people can vet the award too, and the committee should take these into consideration while selecting the nominees.

Ericlcc: Already our society is so layered, we definitely can do without another. Now amongst the rich, we have those with honorifics and those without. Among bumiputera we already have that Umnoputra and bumiputera dichotomy, amongst the middle-class, those in private and those in public sector.

And at the very top, no doubt a small speck of super mega-rich individuals. Best of all, at the bottom layer we have a large harmonious pot of poor Malaysians. No titles or wealth but happy to be called ‘datuk’ by their grandchildren.

Unfortunately, the Orang Asli seem to be locked out of this layer too.

Headhunter: The joke now is, there are more Datuks in jail than outside. For any gangster who is worth his salt, a Datuk title is a must. The value of such awards has diminished to that of a fake university degree.
