Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu believes the prime minister's wish to call for general election soon may become an empty statement.

"If the prediction of bad economy becomes reality early next year, then Najib Abdul Razak will cancel his ambition in silently attacking the opposition.

"Thus, his dream to dissolve Parliament in the first quarter of 2017, ie before May 2017, will only become an empty statement," he said at the party convention held in Shah Alam today.

Najib had indicated the 14th general election would be held soon, without giving a date.

At his keynote address at Amanah's convention today, Mohamad, who is fondly known as Mat Sabu described the 2017 Budget as a "murukku budget" that was not able to address the rising living cost.

"This murukku and candies will be soon forgotten when the situation escalates (when the people feel the pain of rising cost). The people felt the impact of ringgit depreciation," he said.

Even if Najib postponed the poll, he said the premier could not get rid of the possible risk which might threaten his survival.

"Najib would face a bigger risk if he postpones the poll as 1MDB trials will be heard in six countries." 

He, however admitted it would be a tough task to bring Umno-BN, which has no shame any longer, down in the polls.

"They will use whatever means to stay in power," he told the 600-strong Amanah delegates.

Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, secretariat manager Mandeep Singh, former Bersih chairperson A Samad Said, former minister Zaid Ibrahim and activist Hishamuddin Rais also attended the meeting.

Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who accompanied PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to visit his ill younger brother Rosli, did not attend the meeting.

Mat Sabu pointed out the executive branch, which held too much power, had turned the legislative branch into a "rubber stamp".

"The members of the legislative seem unable to play their role in the political system. The representatives are seen as welfare officer as compared with lawmakers (before)," he said.

The representatives seemed to spend more time in disseminating government funds as compared with doing research for law amendments and policy-making, he added.

If they took Putrjaya in the next poll, he said Amanah, together with Harapan and Bersatu would form an independent commission on 1MDB to take necessary actions based on the investigations and findings of the 1MDB audit report, Public Accounts Committee's report on 1MDB and various findings done by other jurisdictions.

"We will declassify the (audit) report (on 1MDB). We will give our cooperation to the foreign authorities."
