PKR's Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has called on the government to set up a special parliamentary committee on public transport.

This is for public transport to continue to be prioritised, she said, following the recent launch of Phase 1 of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 1 between Semantan and Sungai Buloh.

"It should not stop here. We want priority to be given to land public transport so that the rakyat can benefit from it," Nurul Izzah told reporters at the Sungai Buloh MRT station today, after taking the MRT from Taman Tun Dr Ismail earlier.

She hopes that other MPs who have taken a ride on the MRT, such as International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed, would support her call to set up the special parliamentary committee.

While she was satisfied and happy with the MRT service today, she said she was more concerned about how cost-efficient the service would be for consumers.

"We are happy we are here (at the MRT). Clearly, we support public transportation.

"We also want to make sure it is cost-efficient," she said.

PKR's Batu MP Tian Chua, who was also present, thanked the MRT staff for welcoming them and showing them around the facilities.

The other segments of public transport should also be improved, especially the Rapid KL buses, Tian Chua said, so that more housing areas would be connected with public transportation.

He also said that there should be more parking facilities for MRT users, pointing out that the TTDI MRT station does not provide parking.

Nurul Izzah added that all the people support the MRT and want it to succeed, and that they were merely giving constructive criticism.

Phase 1 of the MRT Line 1 from Semantan to Sungai Buloh was launched last Thursday by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
