Republican Party heralds 'good news of a new King' on Christmas

The conservative Republican Party, from which presidential nominee Donald Trump takes office on Jan 20, issued a Christmas greeting yesterday hailing "a new King."

The statement, attributed to Republican National Committee chairperson Reince Priebus and co-chairperson Sharon Day (in picture above, on left of Priebus), wished "Merry Christmas to all!"

It was unclear if the statement, which did not mention Trump by name, intended to carry a double meaning about a "new king."

"Over two millennia ago, a new hope was born into the world, a Saviour who would offer the promise of salvation to all mankind. Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King," said Day and Priebus, whom Trump has named to be White House chief of state.

"We hope Americans celebrating Christmas today will enjoy a day of festivities and a renewed closeness with family and friends."

Trump, whose right-wing populist message scored a surprise victory in last month's election over left-leaning rival Hillary Clinton, has made a point of saying Merry Christmas in response to what he claims is a politically correct push to de-emphasise religiosity in favour of a blander greeting of "happy holidays."

The party statement voiced "deepest gratitude" toward US military members, especially those separated from families, and called for Americans to remember those "less fortunate."

"Many on this day are without hope, and need the kindness and compassion of those around them. It is our prayer we will rise to meet the material, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals all around us," Priebus and Day said.
