1MDB's new auditor Parker Randall must review the sovereign fund's 2013 and 2014 books, which had been disavowed by the previous auditor Deloitte, said DAP's Tony Pua.

The Petaling Jaya Utara MP said this would allow Parker Randall's Malaysian associate firm Afrizan Tarmili Khairul Azhar (Aftaas) to come up with accurate opening balances for it to audit 1MDB's 2015 and 2016 accounts.

"If Aftaas fails to perform the above review and audit, they can be assured that not only will their market reputation be left in tatters in Malaysia, their international affiliation, Parker Randall – whose credibility 1MDB is banking on – will be similarly disgraced internationally and dragged through the mud," Pua said in a statement today.

1MDB's previous auditor Deloitte had disavowed the 2013 and 2014 accounts it audited, following the US Department of Justice's (DOJ) civil forfeiture suits involving the state investment firm.

The DOJ had claims that more than US$3.5 billion of 1MDB funds had been misappropriated.

1MDB chairperson Irwan Serigar announced on Thursday that Deloitte has been replaced by Parker Randall as 1MDB's auditor.

Parker Randall refers to itself as the association of member firms of Parker Randall International Limited.

It has a collection of associate companies around the world and its member firms offer auditing, accountancy and other services in 53 countries in more than 100 offices.

Its associate firm in Malaysia is Aftaas.

While Aftaas has never come under the spotlight for questionable practices, opposition leaders have in the past pulled the trigger on companies it had audited.

This includes a 2014 expose by PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli, who claimed the federal government was still paying for the construction of the new UiTM campus in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, despite having privatised the project to Rekajaya Projek Sdn Bhd through direct negotiations.

According to the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM), Aftaas was the auditor for Rekajaya as of 2012.
