A new Biodiversity Bill will be tabled in Parliament in April to tackle environmental woes, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

The bill would seek to compel domestic solid waste companies to have their waste collected to be cleaned up by another company.

"Currently, the companies clean up their own waste. We need to have this (bill), the policy needs to be changed," he said.

"The attorney-general has just agreed that (the bill) will be tabled in April," he said when attending the ministry's monthly assembly.

The bill will create a multi-million environmental industry on solid waste cleaning, he said.

Besides the Biodiversity Bill, he said the ministry would also introduce policies and laws on water.

It was reported that the ministry aimed to fill legal gaps and combine existing laws into the comprehensive Act.

Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong parliamentarian, said the bill would be very important in protecting forests, marine parks, wildlife and water bodies.

Don't be nice to loggers

Meanwhile, he urged newly minted Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg to continue the work and the policies of his Adenan Satem.

"Don't issue timber concession to the logger. Revoke the timber license of those inolved in illegal logging," he said.

"Don't give the state land for plantation," he added.

On November 2014, Adenan had issued a stern warning against the six timber tycoons, telling them not to mess with him.

Adenan said he would rope in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to stem corruption which he described as "very bad" in the timber industry.
