Sungai Besar Umno division head Jamal Md Yunos has tendered his resignation from all party positions on grounds that his recent actions had brought the party, particularly its Selangor leadership, to disrepute.

Jamal's letter, dated yesterday, said he had to resign in order to not tarnish the party's good name.

"I believe that this case has negatively affected the good name of the party and its highest leadership, especially in Selangor.

"As a member that loves this party which has contributed greatly to the people, I take full responsibility for the incident and tender my resignation as Sungai Besar Umno and BN chief," wrote Jamal.

The letter was submitted to Selangor Umno head Noh Omar today.

He decided to quit after he and his supporters were accused of gang robbery following raids on alleged illegal gambling outlets.

The letter was shared in Jamal's media WhatsApp group along with a picture of Jamal with Noh at the Tanjong Karang MP's office in Putrajaya.

Jamal's resignation came following his recent five-day remand for his 'raid' on premises he claimed were illegal gambling dens in Taman Kosas Ampang in December last year.

On Monday, Jamal and nine of his supporters were released from remand for their case which is under investigation under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang-robbery.

Jamal's 'raid' on the premises was part of his campaign to bring to light what he claimed was the failure of the Selangor government in curbing illegal activities in the state.

Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat said that the premises that Jamal claimed were illegal gambling dens, were family entertainment centres licensed by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council.
