Selangor MCA should urge their leaders to resign as cabinet ministers should PAS' effort to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (Act 355) be given priority in the Dewan Rakyat, said Selangor DAP assistant treasurer Lau Weng San.

Lau said this would be more useful to MCA's effort to state their protest against PAS' proposal, rather than urging DAP to seek the removal of 67 PAS members as local government councilors in Selangor.

"The irony is that Selangor MCA now claim that Selangor DAP is all powerful and influential, that we can dictate the position of councilors in Selangor, although they have accused us of being powerless puppets in the past," said Lau in a statement today.

Even if all councilors from PAS were to be removed, it would have no impact on efforts to stymie PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's private member's bill to amend Act 355, said Lau, who is also the Kampung Tunku state assembly person.

"In actual fact, Selangor PAS has only one MP in the Dewan Rakyat after three MPs elected during the 2013 elections are now no longer in PAS," said Lau.

After the break-up of Pakatan Rakyat in 2015, MPs for Kota Raja, Shah Alam and Sepang joined Parti Amanah Negara, while the MP for Hulu Langat remained with PAS.

"In short, without the support from BN and UMNO, Abdul Hadi's private member's bill motion will never be given government priority," he said, in response to a Selangor MCA's statement on March 6.

Therefore, the priority for MCA now was to object against Putrajaya and Umno's attempt to facilitate the passage of Abdul Hadi's bill, said Lau.

"What MCA should own up is to whether they are willing to resign their ministerial positions in the cabinet the moment Abdul Hadi's private member's bill motion is given government priority and/or when such bill to be taken over by the federal government.

"MCA will have a lot to answer should any of these happen, because the best way to kill Abdul Hadi's motion is not giving it any government priority and not allowing the federal government to take over the bill at all," he stressed.

Abdul Hadi's bill is expected to be debated during the ongoing Dewan Rakyat sitting although this is far from certain as there are many government bills that will likely take priority.
