Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) president Muhyiddin Yassin has denied agreeing to the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 or Act 355.

"Until now, I as the Pagoh MP, still do not know the final position (of the proposed amendments) which will be debated in Parliament, so it is difficult to decide.

"We will wait and see the final form which will be tabled first," he told a press conference at the Bersatu headquarters in Petaling Jaya this afternoon.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had previously said Muhyiddin agreed in principle with their efforts to amend Act 355.

However, Muhyiddin said this statement was not entirely accurate.

"My stand is that we want to see the situation first but some people assumed that we have agreed.

"How can we agree when we are still not clear (on the proposed amendments)?” he asked.

Meanwhile, Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad addressed the much-anticipated debate between himself and Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz.

Nazri is brave, he said, so he believes the Padang Rengas MP will show up to the debate.

"But he is not responsible for the government because the government has denied (their involvement).

"They (the government) said this is Nazri's personal capacity, not the government.

"It's okay, personal is fine. We accept," Mahathir said. 

He said as far as he knows, the debate, which will be held in Padang Rengas on March 25, will not be called off.

They will also ensure no fights will break out during the debate, he said, and he hopes those who attend the debate will behave themselves.

"I hope they will listen to what Nazri has to say and if they want to question (us), they can do so," he said.
